About Datto File Protection

Datto File Protection (DFP) is an cloud-based file backup service. It consists of the following components:

File Protection Desktop

File Protection Desktop is the application installed on a computer that is responsible for securely transmitting data between the device on which the application is installed and the File Protection service. It runs silently in the background, ensuring that your data is securely backed up whenever a file is added or changed.

File Protection Desktop also allows you to customize which folders are backed up, monitor backup progress, and access File Protection Online, described below.

To get started with Datto File Protection, Install or uninstall File Protection Desktop.

File Protection Server

File Protection Server is a component of the Datto File Protection service. It is designed specifically to run on server operating systems to back up the files stored on local, attached, or network drives.

File Protection Server always runs in service mode, which ensures that it's constantly backing up even on unattended devices.

File Protection Server will operate on all Windows operating systems. For full system requirements, please refer to File Protection Server requirements.

To get started with File Protection Server, refer to Install or uninstall File Protection Server.

To learn more about centralized management of all File Protection servers and automated alerts for File Protection Server status and errors via File Protection Manager, refer to Servers and Server detail.
